Back to School Horror Picks

Posted on Tuesday, August 12, 2014 by

For some, the impending doom of “fall semester” is approaching. I’ve compiled a list of my favorite school related werewolves, vampires, and teen screams. Whether you are sending your small ones off this year, or heading to classes yourself, this list is everything you need to prepare for back to school. Check it out after the jump!

Buffy The Vampire Slayer (1992)

There is something so powerful about a valley girl cheerleader who kicks major vampire ass. Buffy is basically like if Kathleen Hanna were the chosen one to defend the human race from vampires. But also Luke Perry? Be still my beating heart.

Return to Horror High (1987)

Return to Horror High is quite possibly one of the most ridiculous movies I have ever seen. This is your classic teen slasher flick, about a film company who decide to make a movie at a school where a terrible murder happened years earlier. Then everyone starts to die. How meta. Keep an eye out for little baby George Clooney.

Halloween H20: 20 Years Later (1998)

This is actually one of my favorite Halloween movies. You've got Josh Hartnett, Michelle Williams, LL Cool J... it's like Teen People cast a horror movie. I could watch Jamie Lee Curtis swing an axe all day.

Prom Night (1980)

Seriously, Jamie Lee Curtis is my favorite scream queen. Prom Night is a teen scream about a group of teenagers who are responsible for a child's death six years earlier, and are then stalked and killed for it. Think a more sad I Know What You Did Last Summer. I feel kind of guilty about it, but I also really liked the 2008 reimagining.

Carrie (1976)

Talk about revenge. Carrie is so rad. You've seen me mention this film before and it is one of my favorite horror movies of all time. Sissy Spacek plays a terrifying, telepathic teen in the film adaptation of Stephen King's classic novel. Horror trivia: Stephen King was so new to the industry at this time, that his name was spelled "Steven King" in the original trailer. You've got to see the remake, too.

Class of Nuke 'Em High (1986)

TROMA! Mutants. Gross. Awesome.

The Craft (1996)

"We are the weirdos, mister." A group of teen witches at a Catholic school welcome a new girl and chaos ensues. The Craft is so cool. 1) A woman of color as a main character in a horror film! 2) I want to actually be Nancy. 3) Skeet Ulrich is a creepy babe.

Ginger Snaps (2001)

More powerful female leads! When bitten by a werewolf, 16 year old, death obsessed, Ginger begins to change. She feeds on humans, turns others into werewolves, and is seriously aware of her sexuality. I love Ginger's character so much and I think she is actually representative of true teen angst. Ginger Snaps is a cult classic horror comedy and is worth the watch.

The Faculty (1998)

I saw The Faculty for the first time last year without knowing a single thing about it and I was SO DELIGHTED. Does anyone remember the Bailey School Kids books? This one would be titled "Aliens Don't Teach Classes."

Scream (1996)

"Do you like scary movies?" Scream is my favorite slasher flick of all time. Wes Craven forever.

Honorable mention:

American Mary (2013)

Special thanks to my friend, Kylie Mart, for pointing out this gem for the back to school list. (Student loans are a bitch, am I right?) I loved American Mary so much and truly think this is the greatest piece of American horror cinema in the last few years. If you haven't seen this film yet, sign into Netflix and watch it immediately.

What are your favorite horror movies set in a school? Any recommendations? Leave them in the comments. XOXO
